While we are very relaxed and there is no long list of rules, there are a few things you need to know, so please take the time to read this page. Thank you.
Food and Farm Shops
Dining-In Options
Top tips if you are looking for any takeaway food:
Chinese – Red Panda, Pannier Market 13/14 Fore Street, Callington PL17 7AD, T 01579 383373 for collection and delivery (they know the Kernock estate well). If you order by phone you will be asked to pay by cash on delivery. If you order online for delivery you can pay by card.
Indian/Nepalese – Everest Ktchen, Saltash, PL12 6JQ, T 01752 840404 for both collection and delivery, they won’t deliver from an online order E info@everestkitchensaltash.co.uk
Fish and Chips – Blue Chip, 30a Fore Streeet, Callington PL17 7AD T 01579 384999 is a good, local, fish and chips venue.
Côte at Home: Enjoy a “restaurant” experience in the comfort of your own cottage – brilliant restaurant-quality food and wine delivered to your cottage, so no arguments about who has to drive. Côte Brasserie has reinvented its offering and come up with Côte at Home, which delivers high quality produce from their kitchen, cellar and butchery, right to your door. The food arrives beautifully packaged, with ice blocks and sustainable insulation, and all you need to do is heat it through as required (apart from the fabulous steaks and burgers, which you do need to cook…). The range includes set menus, picnic items, starters, mains, some sumptuous artisan cheeses, breads and puddings. Great quality food, with a very reasonable price tag (compares very favourably with Waitrose for prices on things like fillet steaks and artisan cheeses).
Gusto: delivers fresh ingredients and easy-to-follow recipes to your door, so you can enjoy mouthwatering home-cooked meals in 10 minutes or less. Choose from over 250 recipes and have everything you need delivered to your cottage. www.gusto.co.uk
Private Chef: If you don’t want to cook, but don’t want to go out either, then why not hire in a private chef. Harrie at Boo to a Goose is a Cordon Bleu trained chef, who will whip you up a fabulous dinner for very reasonable rates. On the day she will arrive at an agreed time; cook, serve and clear up your meal and of course leave the kitchen spotless! She also does all manner of celebration cakes.
Local Food Shopping
Local Farm Shops
We are really lucky to have some fantastic small family businesses and farm produce in the area, so if you want to, you can totally avoid the supermarket while you’re down here.
We are proud to shop local and provide our welcome breakfast packs from St Dominick Community Shop, PL12 6TD just 4.3 miles from Kernock. By supporting this Village Community Shop, customers are supporting local businesses and contributing to building a surplus that can be reinvested for the greater benefit of all within the Village: dairy products from Trewithen Dairy Farm, sauasages from Trehill Farm, Cornish Farmhouse bacon, eggs from Newlands Farm or Daveys Cracking Good Eggs, bread from Blakes Bakery.
At Carkeel (between us and the Tamar Bridge, SN PL12 6PH) there is a great little butcher – Tamar Valley Meats. A lot of the meat comes from their own farm. It is great quality meat and very good value T 01752 847666. On the same site, but at the other end of the garden centre is Tamar View Fruiterers, a very popular family-owned grocery store/farm shop which sells not only fruit & veg, but also local milk, cheese, bacon, sausages, and a wide selection of other food items, much of it local Cornish produce. They also stock wonderful raw frozen croissants and pain au chocolat. W www.tamarviewfruiterers.co.uk T 01752 844700.
For fresh eggs laid today, there are quite a few farm gate stands, who operate on an honesty box basis. We purchase eggs from St Dominick Community Shop who sell local free range eggs.
Darts Farm Shop, Topsham, Devon EX3 0QH: Just 8 minutes from the M5 junction 13 at Exeter and just over an hour from Kernock, award winning Darts Farm, is a great stop off en-route to Cornwall. Stop for coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or picnic provisions.
Strawberry Fields Farm Shop, Lifton, Devon PL16 0DH. Just 17 miles north of Kernock, this is almost a day out! Huge farm shop, restaurant (known to be exceptional for Sunday Lunch) and also seasonal pick your own experiences including strawberries, sunflowers, daffodils, wild flowers and tulips.
Strawberry Fields has a second smaller shop at the Buckfastleigh services on the A38, 40 minutes short of Kernock when heading down through Devon. There’s a large eV charging centre there, too. https://strawberry-fields-farm-shop.myshopify.com/pages/buckfastleigh-farm-shop
Tre, Pol and Pen Farm Shop and Restaurant, Lezant Launceston PL15 9NN, 11 miles north of Kernock. Visit in person or you can also shop online and have your goodies delivered to your cottage (orders over £50) and free delivery for orders over £100.
Tamar Valley Food Hubs provides a local, ethical, affordable and friendly online farmers’ market. It brings together the best of local and seasonal produce in one place. Place your order between 6pm on Friday and 9.30am on Wednesday for delivery on Friday afternoon to your home, workplace or to one of our free collection points in the Tamar Valley, Tavistock and Plymouth.
Supermarkets
Waitrose is our closest supermarket (4 miles), and is just before the Saltash roundabout on the A388 PL12 6LD. There is a Lidl on the other side of the Saltash roundabout (great for fresh baked goods, among others) PL12 6TW. There is a large Tesco in Callington PL17 7RD which also does fuel and EV charging. The nearest Sainsbury’s is 12 miles away at Marsh Mills in Plymouth, PL3 6RL. Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s all deliver here – please provide the name of your cottage, Kernock Cottages, PL12 6RY.
There is a local company, food4myholiday, which delivers locally-sourced food (including ready-meals) to the cottage – their full list is on their website food4holiday – You surf, we shop! (food4myholiday.com)
Non-food Shopping
The best of non-food shopping in Cornwall centres around the skills of local artists and crafters. There are several small art galleries all over Cornwall, in The Barbican in Plymouth and also in Tavistock (about 20 minutes away). The Barbican also has a discounted Dartington Crystal shop. Tavistock is a pretty little town (frequently voted Best Market Town in England) which also has a covered market selling arts and crafts, some interesting antiques shops and reclamation yards, some lovely boutiques and the most fantastic cheese shop. Plymouth has most of the big chain stores (M&S, Waterstones, Monsoon, H&M etc) and Exeter is just an hour away, with a John Lewis. Saltash and Callington are local with a limited number of shops but pharmacies, antique shops and good value gift-type shops. Lostwithiel is an interesting small town with some individual and antiques shops off the main road. St Ives is renowned for its galleries, Padstow for food and drink and craft shops. Looe and Polperro are local fishing villages with more craft and independent shops.
For bargain-hunters, Trago Mills on the A38, Liskeard, past Dobwalls, is worth a visit. They sell most things you can think of, from clothes and shoes to furniture, rugs, DIY equipment, lighting etc. if you have forgotten anything this might be the place to go. The kitchen and gifts department carries lines such as Dartington and Wedgewood.
Car refuelling (including gas and electric charging points)
Our two EV charging points on the Kernock Estate are slow charging and you will have received details in our email welcome information. If you wish to use this facility please contact Damian stay@kernockcottages.com or mobile 07734 812302 for our honesty charging policy.
Hatt Service Station (1.5 miles away) is the closest T 01752 840420, SN PL12 6PW
B&M Stores
has EV fast chargingBP Saltash (3 miles) SN PL12 6LF – all fuel grades, but no LPG autogas
Strawberry Fields Farm Shop Buckfastleigh: If you are travelling West on the A30 towards Plymouth, the Strawberry Fields Farm Shop and Café at Buckfastleigh (follow signs to local services and it is on the left before the mini roundabout) has several car charging points and space to give dogs a stretch. SN TQ11 0JR
Health & Safety
You are very welcome to make use of the walkways, woods and open areas of the estate, however, please be aware of the hazards. All the fencing is topped with barbed wire for stock control, and not suitable for climbing on or over. If you go walking in the fields please make sure that you close gates. Kernock has a healthy rabbit population so please do take care when walking the grounds and dog park, as there are areas – particularly in the woods – where the paths are festooned with rabbit holes. There are also a number of walls around the cottages which could present an attraction to an adventurous child. We have fenced and planted lots of prickly things around those which are a potential hazard as a deterrent, but please ensure the safety of your children by ensuring they do not have unsupervised access to potentially dangerous areas.
Bins and Waste
Bin liners and bin bags are provided for you. Please put any full bin liners, tied at the top, in the black dustbins outside your property. We will collect these during your stay this applies to both waste and recycling. Everything is removed by a professional contractor and nothing goes to landfill. Please see our sustainablity page for more informaiton.
IMPORTANT – Kernock is not connected to mains sewerage. It is very important for the correct functioning of the system that NO animal fats are put down the sink (please wait until it has congealed, and put the solid matter in the bin). We are also unable to use bleach, anti-bacterial detergents or any biological agents. We therefore provide you with environmentally suitable washing machine, dishwasher and cleaning agents and would be grateful if you would ONLY use these. Please also DO NOT dispose of tampons, sanitary towels, nappies, condoms etc down the loo. We have provided covered bins in all bathrooms for this purpose. This will prevent any unpleasant back-ups in the system which could affect your enjoyment of your holiday. Thank you for your cooperation on this issue.
Taxis
There are a number of small taxi firms which operate locally – advance booking is definitely recommended. There is a Black Cab system in Plymouth itself and it is fairly easy to hail a cab or find one at one of the cab ranks. Saltash-based A.W. Cabs have the advantage of knowing exactly how to find us, as we use this one regularly – just say you are staying at the cottages at Kernock House in Pillaton. They also have a people carrier for larger groups, and can be contacted on (01752) 848400. Kit Hill Cars also has a people carrier, which takes up to seven passengers – 07920 473747. Two other Saltash-based firms – Double Two can be contacted on (01752) 848422 (ask for Lionel!) and Cottons on (01752) 848484. Our postcode for SatNav is PL12 6RY (but be aware that we share this with several neighbouring properties including Kernock Park Plants next door, and Kernock Lodge at the bottom of the lane).
